it was 1970, and while most teenage girls were wearing bell bottom jeans and worrying more about ironing their hair, saying goodbye to their soldier boys in the back of their vans annette walsh was heading off to college. not just any college, though, the college that most people break their next to get into. yale university, where she planned to graduate valedictorian and move on to graduates school. things didn't go according to plan, however. bartholomew quinn was thirty eight years old and one of three behavioral sciene professors teaching the year she showed up. she wasn't in his class and she was over the age of eighteen, so bart never felt too ashamed of his attraction to anette. not until their evening talks turned into a pregnancy. the pregnancy turned into a marriage.
her mother took two years off from her education to steady herself and grow comfortable with her sudden occupation as mother and wife. as quickly as she could, though, she returned to school where she studied to become a teacher and worked as bart's assistant. margeaux spent those early years, when a child should be growing accustomed to their parents and knowing who was going to raise them, between baby sitting neighbors. due to the absence of her parents time and affection, margeaux began to imagine her own loving family. in fact, for the next eight years or so, her imaginary family were her anchor and her first creative license. once letters and numbers became clear, margeaux began to use her mothers type writer to write short stories about outings with her 'mommy' and 'daddy'. the stories upset margeaux's mother and until high school, when typing was neccesary, margeaux was banned from using the type writer.
she kept writing, of course. computers became popular by then and when she felt less lazy she used pen and paper, but she never stopped. her stories excelled with age and they became less about the family she longed for and more for her longings in general. she wrote about things she knew and things she wish she did. her writing eventually landed her an internship in new york, for new york magazine. the opportunity was too great to turn down, even if she was frightened entirely by the thought. a six month internship which introduced her to a writing career and an upper class lifestyle, while offering her an expensive place to stay and several goodies to take home.
she hopes to learn a lot here.
